Abounding in hope
“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”
To abound in or with something means to be fully supplied or filled with to overflowing. Now if God is the God of hope, and if He desires to fill us with unspeakable joy and peace beyond our understanding, how is it that we are many times not abounding in this hope through the power of the Holy Ghost?
Romans 14:17 says, “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” What so often happens in our lives is that we allow the systems of this world to distract us and to take our attention off of Jesus, our bridegroom. We begin to focus on fulfilling our fleshly lusts as we draw from the wells of this world rather than from the living water freely given to us by Jesus.
Have we forgotten that we are the bride of Christ? Have we lost our excitement over the coming wedding feast? Jeremiah 2:32 says, “Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.” Sadly today many believers are ending up divorced, not because they no longer love one another, but because they have taken their eyes off Jesus; loving the praise of men more than the praise of God (John 12:43).
You see, our marriage to Christ should be one filled with great joy and excitement; one filled with an overflowing hope and love through the power of the Holy Ghost bringing us to a place of total and utter devotion and surrender to the truth; that we be filled with joy unspeakable and the righteousness of Christ abiding in us, our hope of glory.
But the evil one does not want us to be one flesh with Jesus Christ nor one flesh in our earthly marriages. He roams around this earth as a roaring lion looking whom he can devour. And because the union between a man and a woman on this earth has been ordained by God to reflect our union and marriage to Christ, marriages have become a target for the evil one as he seeks to do nothing else but to steal, to kill, and to destroy anything that resembles our union with Christ. He does this through appealing to the lust of our flesh, the lust of our eyes and the pride of life, and we soon end up chasing the wind and never being satisfied.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, Jesus has come that we might have life, and that we might have it more abundantly. He is the Prince of Peace, the King of Kings and He is the Alpha and the Omega. Jesus is our bridegroom and He is passionate about His bride. He in fact loves His bride so much that He gave His very life for us.
So today, in our marriages, in our homes, in our relationships with others, in our places of work, may we reflect the true joy, peace and hope in Jesus having asked our hand in marriage and that His Father in heaven has accepted us because His Son has chosen us to be His bride; flesh of His flesh and bone of His bone. Let us not lose our first love and let us not take our eyes of our bridegroom, Jesus Christ, and let us abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Additional scriptures for reading:
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee.
Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
1 John 1:4
And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
